The Writing Tools Panel

You’ve seen how to use the Writing Tools toolbar to rewrite or proofread text, but Writing Tools can do more. In this video, you’ll explore some additional transformations.

Open the CoverCraft sample app in the starter folder, then build and run. Select Define Your Skills. Enter whatever skills come to mind here and then highlight them. Choose Writing Tools from the app’s Edit menu, then Show Writing Tools, to open the Writing Tools panel. If you’re not happy with your spelling or grammar, start with a Proofread.

Then, check out how easily Writing Tools transforms a comma-separated series into a bulleted list.

Feel free to explore some of the other Writing Tools options.

To see the power of the summarizing options, though, it makes more sense to work with a longer text. To do so, select Research an Opportunity and then enter the URL to any job posting. If you don’t have a link at the ready, try this Kodeco one:

https://www.kodeco.com/32437115-opportunities

Highlight the text displayed inside the web view and then experiment. Here’s what a summary of this job posting looks like. And here are key points. Notice how in each results view, you can copy the transformed text as well as choose to provide feedback to train the model. (Because we’re working with beta software, we do see here an option that doesn’t make sense for the view; on this web view, we actually cannot replace the view’s text with the Writing Tools key points.)

Now, we’re looking at Summarize and Key Points in the context of a job posting, but both these features are useful anytime you come across a long block of text. In those cases, try both Summarize and Key Points. You may learn something a little different from each.

The Writing Tools experiences you explored in this lesson will be available in every standard system text and web view. In some cases, as a developer, you can customize how the tools behave.
