Instruction 01
This lesson explores Writing Tools working with CoverCraft, a simple app for drafting cover letters. Follow along by downloading the sample app here. When you build and run the app found in the starter folder, and then enter some text, you should see something like this:
To use Apple Intelligence, you need a Mac computer with Apple silicon, an iPad with Apple silicon, or an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max or later. You’ll also need iOS 18.1 or iPadOS 18.1. Although this module focuses on iOS and iPadOS, Writing Tools also runs on macOS Sequoia.
Note: Initially, Apple Intelligence will only be available in U.S. English, so your device and Siri languages should be set accordingly.
Meet In-line Writing Tools
In-line Writing Tools polishes existing text, offering the options to Proofread or Rewrite. Although the tools rely on a generative LLM, they do not generate text from scratch. Instead, the user must first enter some text and then select it to conjure the Writing Tools.
Try this now. Tap Craft Cover Letter and then enter some text. To see what the tools can do, try adding some misspellings or awkward phrasing. Leave some room for Apple to show its intelligence. Select your text and you should see something like this:
Note: If you’re following along and not seeing Writing Tools, make sure you have Apple Intelligence & Siri enabled in Settings.
Next to the options to proofread or rewrite the selected text, you can tap the colorful Apple Intelligence icon to display the full Writing Tools panel, which you’ll learn more about soon.
Choose Proofread and, after a brief animation, the toolbar shows the number of suggested changes, each underlined in the text. There’s also a button to toggle between the original and revised texts. Select any suggestion to learn more.
The Proofread Toolbar
Take a closer look at the Proofread toolbar shown at the bottom of the Craft Cover Letter view when the user selects text, chooses Writing Tools from the Edit or context menu and then chooses Proofread:
In the Proofread toolbar shown above, five suggested changes were found and the user is currently viewing the fifth.
In iOS 26, the toolbar looks slightly different:
Going from left to right on the toolbar, the user can choose to:
- Revert the changes and return to their original draft.
- Toggle between the original and revised text.
- Share positive feedback to train the generative AI model (represented in the singular feedback button in iOS 26).
- Share less-than-positive feedback to train the model (represented in the singular feedback button in iOS 26).
- Move forward and back through the proposed changes.
- Dismiss the toolbar.
Next, you’ll see how Writing Tools can rewrite text in a brief video demo.
