About a month or so back, Rod Strougo and I taught a fun workshop at the Voices That Matter iPhone conference called Cocos2D via Minigames!

The workshop got rave reviews and we had a blast teaching it, so we’re pleased to announce that we’re having another offering of the workshop coming up this June, in Atlanta, GA!

And more good news – this time the workshop will be all weekend long, and we’re adding some brand new sections and more minigames!

What Do You Mean, Minigames?!

If you haven’t heard of Cocos2D via Minigames before, this is a workshop for beginner/intermediate Cocos2D developers, where we show you how to build your own iPhone games with Cocos2D from the ground up!

We’ll start by showing you how to make a minigame about a cat having a rough day:

Cat Jump!

Then you’ll try things out for yourself by making your own minigame with Cocos2D from scratch!

We’ll provide you instructions and art, and you’ll make a game about the cat taking a much-needed break:

Cat Cheers!

Then we’ll show you how you can use Chipmunk physics to make a game about the now drunk cat trying to take a nap:

Cat Nap

Then you’ll make another minigame – and so on! By the end of the workshop, you should walk out with 6 games, and a ton of experience!

Specifically, you will learn:

  • How to add sprites, move them with actions, and play sound effects
  • How to use sprite sheets, animations, and move characters via the accelerometer
  • How to use the Chipmunk game physics library that is included with Cocos2D
  • How to use Chipmunk joints, impulses, and forces
  • How to use tile maps to create large, scrolling worlds to explore
  • How to make games for both iPhone, iPad, and Retina display
  • And much more!

More Details

This offering of Cocos2D via Minigames will be in Atlanta, GA on June 11-June 12, 2011.

Everyone who comes to the workshop should bring your own Mac so you can code along. It’s a hands-on workshop – we’ll give some slides and demos, then turn you loose so you can try it yourself.

You should have Xcode installed on your machine prior to the workshop. We’ll be using Xcode 4 for demos and such, but if you’re still using Xcode 3 it’s OK. You don’t necessarily need to have Cocos2D installed as we’ll cover how in the class.

We’re also pleased to announce that Shawn Grimes will be helping us out with the workshop as well! Shawn will be helping organize the place, the food, and the mad loot we’ll be giving away to you guys in the workshop!

Important note: This workshop assumes you are familiar with Objective-C programming and have used Xcode in the past. If you’re completely new to Objective-C, you may want to study up on it a bit first – you’ll get a lot more out of the workshop that way!
